Understanding Fezolinetant: A Non-Hormonal Option for Menopausal Symptoms

Hot Flashes

These vasomotor symptoms (VMS) affect daily life for millions of women, causing discomfort, sleep disturbances, and a reduction in quality of life. For women seeking relief without the use of hormone-based therapies, a new option, fezolinetant, has emerged as a promising solution.

What Is Fezolinetant?

Fezolinetant is a non-hormonal medication specifically designed to treat moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause. It works differently from hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by targeting the brain's thermoregulatory system instead of supplementing estrogen levels. This makes it a valuable alternative for women who cannot or prefer not to use hormones to manage their symptoms.

How Does Fezolinetant Work?

Hot flashes and night sweats occur because of changes in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain responsible for regulating body temperature. During menopause, lower estrogen levels overstimulate specific neurons in the hypothalamus, known as KNDy neurons. These neurons release a chemical called neurokinin B, which signals the body to respond as though it is overheated—even when it isn’t.

Fezolinetant blocks neurokinin-3 receptors, reducing the overactivity of these neurons and helping to restore balance in the body’s temperature regulation. As a result, the frequency and severity of hot flashes and night sweats are significantly reduced, offering much-needed relief.

Who Can Benefit from Fezolinetant?

Fezolinetant is a great option for women who:

How Is Fezolinetant Different from Hormone Therapy?

Traditional hormone replacement therapy works by supplementing declining estrogen levels. While effective, HRT may not be suitable for women with certain medical conditions, such as a history of breast cancer, blood clots, or cardiovascular disease.

Fezolinetant does not affect hormone levels and focuses solely on the pathways responsible for VMS. This makes it a safer alternative for women with certain risk factors or those looking for a non-hormonal treatment option.
